Is this a sunrise or a sunset? I’m not saying.

Can you tell from a still photo whether it’s a sunrise or sunset? Ever so curious- well yeah, my middle name is curious- I consulted the googles, but didn’t get a definitive answer.

“there’s subtle differences in atmospheric conditions”

“only if you have a trained eye”

“sunsets tend to be pinkish/purplish and sunrises tend to be reddish”

Admittedly, when I search the googles, I don’t go beyond the first page, maybe the 2nd page, so I can’t claim I searched diligently. But anyways, I don’t agree with the last quote above. I’ve certainly seen a lot of reddish sunsets too, as some of these photos from flickr will attest.

I found an interesting quiz at BuzzFeed: Can You Guess if this is a Sunrise or a Sunset? Apparently, it relies on your knowledge of the locales.

No, this is not the quiz I promised you. Your mission, should you wish to accept it, is to identify the body of water in the above photo. I will give you a few hints. First hint: It is in Florida. Your choices are:

  • Gulf of Mexico- I don’t need to explain that, do I?
  • Atlantic Ocean- no explanation needed, right?
  • Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway- An inland waterway that runs the length of Florida (and beyond the state).
  • Lake Okeechobee- The largest freshwater lake in Florida located in the southern part of the state.
  • St. Johns River- the longest river in Florida. It is one of the few rivers that flow north.

Back home in Florida, my local beach is on the Atlantic Coast and I’ve lived in Naples on the Gulf Coast. My grandparents lived on the south side of Lake Okeechobee. My home town is close to the St. Johns River. To get to most beaches in Florida, if not all, you first have to cross the Intracoastal Waterway. So...I have a connection with all of them. Hehehe.

Hint: We were eating seafood.

I’ll add another hint in a comment.
