Are you ready for spring? On my drives to town, I’m starting to see wildflowers in bloom here and there, mainly bright pink phlox. I’m seeing the odd flower here and there on our property as well, but no masses of blooms yet.
About two weeks ago, when it was warming up, I went ahead and bought a few plants, knowing we would be back to cold temperatures again. They’re in containers though, so I can bring them indoors if needed. One of the plants I bought was pink carnations.
When I was young, pre-teens, maybe, my mom bought carnation-scented cologne spray from the Avon lady. I LOVED that scent. They do not product it anymore. This plant has the same exact scent- subtly spicy.

As predicted, we are back to lows in the 30’s. So, while we wait for spring, we’ll enjoy these pictures from springs past.
I’m no scientist of any kind, but it can’t be coincidence that hummingbirds make an appearance as soon as the wildflowers do. According to this map which tracks the migrations of ruby-throated hummingbirds, no sightings have been reported as of yet. From my own experience, they usually show up here around the 2nd week in March.

We also get black-chinned hummers like the one below. In the past, we’ve had rufuous and buff-bellied hummers come to our feeders, but the first two are what we see mostly.

This is what our yard looks like when the wildflowers are blooming all over the place. Not just daisies, but Indian paintbrushes, prairie primroses, coreopsis, bluebonnets, white prickly poppies, phlox, etc. I should note that our property is about 7 acres.

This one was by my mailbox, from 10 years ago, my first spring here.

So, any signs of spring in your neck of the woods?
